Greetings Decision maker,

Do you find yourself increasingly upset whenever you take in news regarding COVID-19? Do you ask yourself — whenever you get a glimpse of your friends’ relatively productive lives through social media posts — if you’re the only one who isn’t flourishing throughout this pandemic?

If you’ve been feeling extra stressed out or worried lately, it’s not uncommon. Many other people are also feeling this way.

As the virus spread through the country, destroying plans as well as routines, it left a path of unpredictability in its wake — enough to create some mental health and wellness problems that need to be resolved. As a matter of fact, according to a CDC report on mental health and wellness, stress and anxiety, as well as clinical depression, are on the rise in the US. In fact, the national rate of stress and anxiety tripled in the second quarter compared to the prior-year quarter (from 8.1% to 25.5%). Meanwhile, depression practically quadrupled (from 6.5% to 24.3%) from a year ago.

Those numbers, together with the significant results of the pandemic in our personal and professional lives, are absolutely a cause for concern. Here’s what you need to do to deal with COVID anxiety.

What’s Up With Me

My parents immigrated from a small country in Eastern Europe called Moldova in 1991, when I was 10, and I retained the cultural holiday traditions of my parents. The big holiday for those with my cultural background is New Year’s Eve, which is kind of like Thanksgiving and Christmas rolled into one: a huge feast with family and friends from all over. Just like Christmas, Thanksgiving, and other holidays, New Year’s was especially challenging to celebrate this year.

My wife Agnes and I have been in a pandemic bubble with another family whose cautious approach to the pandemic is similar to ours. We invited them to join us for a quiet dinner to celebrate New Year’s Eve. While not as grand a celebration as we are accustomed to having for this holiday, it was the safe thing to do, as I discussed in my interview for USA Today. To help make the evening memorable, Agnes and I took the time to prepare a few special dishes. Here's a photo of me and one of my creations, a cheesy and carby khachapuri.
