Greetings Decision maker,

It’s tragically common for people to be promoted up the hierarchy to their “level of incompetence,” a concept in management known as the Peter Principle. They are promoted because they did well in their previous job, not based on their potential to meet the needs of the new position into which they are placed, even when the new role requires a wholly different set of skills. Moreover, there’s often no leadership development training for the new skills they need to learn to succeed in their new position.

This combination of poor promotion practices and lack of training stem largely from a dangerous judgment error (cognitive bias) known as the curse of knowledge, referring to the fact that when we learn something, we face great difficulty in relating to someone who doesn’t know it.

Once we gain a set of skills, such as in managing others, we tend to forget what it feels like to lack these abilities; once we acquire relevant knowledge, such as the jargon of our profession, we tend to use it to speak to those who don’t know this jargon, and then wonder why they fail to understand. As a result, we have difficulties communicating with others about our professional activities, teaching them the skills they need to learn, and collaborating with them in professional settings.

How do the Peter Principle and curse of knowledge work in practice and how do you defeat them? To learn, check out this blog:

Recent Media Appearances

I’ve had a number of recent media appearances about my three recent best-selling books:

What’s Up With Me

As you can see from the media appearances, I’m keeping busy spreading word about my books, most notably my newest book on surviving and thriving by making the right decisions and avoiding cognitive biases during this pandemic and the post-pandemic world. Due to the backlog in Amazon’s shipping orders, and the fact that for some weird reason Amazon didn’t consider my book an “essential” need, you couldn’t order a paper copy on Amazon, only digital. Well, if making the right decisions isn’t essential during the pandemic, what is??? Fortunately, it’s now available in paperback on Amazon. So are its sister books, all part of the Resilience series put out by my publisher to help folks manage the pandemic. Make sure to check all of them out.
