“We at Entergy hired Dr. Gleb as the opening keynote speaker to set the tone for the annual nuclear utility industry conference, hoping he would give a wake-up call about the threats and risks facing us and what steps we can take to prepare. Well, what he delivered exceeded our expectations. His keynote was the talk of the conference, widely described by attendees as giving the nuclear industry “the kick in the pants we needed to jump-start critically important initiatives to address the threats he outlined.” Working with Dr. Gleb to prepare was a pleasure: he thoroughly researched the challenges facing our industry and customized his remarks well. He exhibited flexibility and professionalism by making some last-minute changes due to timing constraints as well as in dealing smoothly with unexpected technical difficulties. Dr. Gleb's highly engaging and dynamic delivery, along with his handling of some tough questions in the Q&A session, impressed attendees. His book was also a popular addition for attendees, including him taking the time to personally sign. We recommend him for anyone who wants a keynote that inspires a challenging audience to pursue necessary changes to help your organization or industry not only survive, but thrive. Thank you Dr. Gleb!”

What's Up With Me

While the Delta variant is a dangerous threat, I sometimes choose to take a more risky course for the sake of more important goals. In this case, I took the chance of presenting at my first major in-person event in over a year, the opening keynote for the annual nuclear utility conference, with over 200 people in the room.

I was the only non-nuclear speaker at the conference, and was hired to help the nuclear industry address the major risks facing them going forward. Doesn't make me the most popular person in the room, but hey, such is life. Check out the testimonial above for what a top nuclear industry executive who runs 6 nuclear plants and hired me to do the talk thought of my keynote.

It was certainly uncomfortable to take off my mask at the keynote, but naturally I couldn’t give the speech in a mask. I’m crossing my fingers that my vaccine and hopefully limited exposure will prevent me from falling ill with Delta. And I’m glad to get back to more cautious behavior now that it’s done.

Recommendations for You

If you choose to take a risk with Delta for an important goal, whether personal or professional, it can feel hard to get back to prudent safety standards. I certainly felt that way: it felt freeing and liberating to take off my mask at the keynote, and it was difficult to convince myself to put it back on. However, the key for me was to remember that even if I skate by on this one occasion, I might not get so lucky next time.

So I convinced myself to go back to my prudent and balanced approach of taking serious precautions while indoors. I hope you recall that any slips in your safety standards, intentional or inadvertent, may not necessarily result in harmful outcomes. However, each time you slip, you take on a whole new amount of risk. The more risk you take on, the more likelihood of infection. So if you do happen to slip accidentally, or decide intentionally that you need to take a risk, recommit to prudent COVID precautions after the occasion.
