Disaster Avoidance Experts

Greetings Decision maker,

Many leaders, driven by their memories of pre-pandemic times, believe that forcing employees to return to the office will naturally lead to mentoring and development. However, the pandemic has shown senior staff that they can be highly productive outside the office, and many of them now resist the idea of returning. When I ran focus groups while helping 23 companies figure out their return to office and hybrid work arrangements, I found that many senior staff forced to return to the office often come in, put on headphones, and avoid interacting with anyone, effectively nullifying the intended osmosis effect.

Instead of forcing everyone to return to the office and hoping for osmosis-driven mentoring, it’s imperative to create a hybrid mentoring program that encompasses in-person and virtual mentoring elements

Testimonial by Bethany Wesley, Communications Director @ Northwest Minnesota Foundation, for Dr Gleb

We started working with Dr. Gleb at the end of last year to revisit and revamp and revise our flex hybrid work arrangements here at the foundation. We started by really setting our goals through a culture vision that really helped us stay centered on what we were trying to accomplish. From there, we launched into a full staff assessment and really letting staff speak to what is working what wasn't working and what they were really wanting to get out of this process. The following steps through the work plan and the roadmap, putting it all together, took us some time, and now roughly about eight, nine months later we're into the implementation. So, it has definitely been a process that got us to where we wanted to go. We arrived at a really productive, exciting step. And now we get to move forward with meeting what both the foundation needs and what meets the needs of staff.”

What's Up With Me

Writing to you from beautiful Honolulu, Hawaii, the day after I finished facilitating the Strategic Retreat for the Senior Management team of Norpac Fisheries Export. As someone who enjoys fish and cares about the environment, I’m proud to support their work, since they not only provide delicious fish, but are on the cutting edge of sustainability and traceability in their supply chains. While Norpac's focus is on supplying fine dining restaurants and food retailers, they also offer a variety sushi-grade fish, frozen fish, poke, and other seafood to consumers at freshseas.com.

Working with Norpac's management team has been a special experience, in part because of how close-knit the group is, with each of their Senior Managers having served in their role for at least 15 years. It has been exciting and rewarding to watch each of these individuals grow and develop over the last six months since the last strategic retreat, and I can see that each one is now better and stronger in tangible ways due to what they learned at the first retreat. Watching the team grow as a result of my efforts motivates me to work even harder to help Norpac’s growth, creating a virtuous cycle. Are there any areas in your life where you have what you would call a virtuous circle?

Here is a photo of one of the beautiful sunsets I got to see in Honolulu.
