Greetings Decision maker,

COVID-19 has disrupted many areas of our lives, including our careers. With so much uncertainty, having a stable job and career is more important than ever as you prepare for many possibilities. Several key industries have been uprooted, and unemployment numbers have jumped to an all-time high, giving people good cause to be concerned. Fortunately, there are steps you can take to strengthen and protect your career during these uncertain times to survive and thrive in the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic.

You should regularly evaluate your job security, pandemic or not, but even more so now, when stability is especially important. Safeguarding your career calls for a frank self-assessment and making the best decisions. You need to be prepared in case you get laid off, or your work hours get reduced, or the company you work for – even the industry you are part of – goes under. Aim for your career to thrive – not just survive, in this new abnormal.

    Recent Media Appearances

I’ve had a number of recent media appearances about my three recent best-selling books:

    • Interview on the “SharkPreneur” Podcast, hosted by one of the original “Shark Tank” sharks, on how to avoid being eaten by the big fish during the coronavirus pandemic by making the wisest decisions
    • Op-ed in The Columbus Dispatch about how to avoid bad decisions as we try to cope with the pandemic
    • Written interview in “The Decision Lab” on making wise decisions in addressing misinformation
    • Televised panel with Columbus Metropolitan Club, which was broadcast on WBNS-10TV and WOSU TV, on addressing unconscious bias
      What’s Up With Me

As I have been taking more time off in my laid-back schedule, I’ve been realizing how burned out I have been. Not completely burned out so that I can’t work, but persistently low energy and focus, functioning at 70-80% capacity during the Spring, when I was working really hard to finish my new book and then launch it. I hadn’t been letting myself truly feel it.

Now that I am letting myself feel it, it’s starting to crash down on me. I’m recognizing low energy reserves and signs of exhaustion. I’m realizing how much I need to take more time off. So I’ve decided to extend my laid-back schedule through the end of the summer at least, and perhaps into early Fall. I’ll aim to work at no more than 50% capacity, barring emergencies or unexpected client needs.

Yes, a part of me feels guilty over doing so. What helps overcome this guilt is realizing the consequences of failing to replenish myself. If I don’t get back my mojo and continue to work at 70-80% capacity, I’ll do about 25% less than I would at full strength. And there’s no guarantee that I’ll be able to work at that 70-80% capacity - my ability to work may deteriorate further.

So by lowering my output to 50% and freeing up time for gardening and reading non-work materials, I am protecting myself going forward. I’ve picked up a copy of Potato: A History of the Propitious Esculent, and it’s been a fun read. So besides the serious recommendation relevant to your professional success I’m making above, consider my mention of the book a casual recommendation of a fun read.
