How Not to Let Cognitive Biases Control Us When Dealing with COVID (Wise Decision Maker Guide 42)

Greetings Decision maker,

Why have so many people made so many bad decisions in dealing with COVID throughout this pandemic?

On the one hand, many ignored the information about the pandemic at first, dismissing its importance. Plenty believed — and some continue to believe — COVID-19 is no worse than the flu and shouldn’t be a concern. Others thought the US medical system would easily cope with it, as it did with SARS and other respiratory infections.

On the other hand, plenty of people have taken aggressive — and unhelpful — actions to address their fears. Many have engaged in panic buying, stocking up on more toilet paper than they can use in a year and getting canned goods that they will never eat. Others turned to hyped-up miracle cures offered by modern-day snake oil salespeople, despite health experts clearly conveying that there’s no known treatment or cure for COVID-19.

Such poor decision making stems from dangerous judgment errors that cognitive neuroscientists like myself call cognitive biases. We need to be wary of cognitive biases in order to survive and thrive during this pandemic.

What's Up With Me

The magic of vaccines! In my previous email to you, I encouraged you to get a vaccine as soon as possible, especially due to the new COVID strains that are leading to a new wave around the US and Europe.

Well, recently I myself had the opportunity to get my vaccination! It’s the luck of the calendar draw. I turned 40 on February 10. Fortunately for me, the state where I live - Ohio - had a specific category for people 40 to 50, before it opened up vaccines for everyone from 16 to 40. So I just squeaked into the specific category and had a much easier time securing an appointment than some other folks who were born just a few months after I was.

Recommendations for You

Lots of folks in my fan base asked me whether I had side effects after I posted about getting a vaccine on social media. To be honest, I had very minor side effects after both doses of the Pfizer vaccine, just a minor arm ache the next couple of days (pain level of 2 on a 1-10 scale). I felt a bit concerned about my immune system not responding strongly, until I read this article. It explained that the strength of your immune response is not correlated to the vaccine’s side effects.
