Disaster Avoidance Experts

Greetings Decision maker,

The pandemic has taught us that remote work is here to stay. It’s no longer a question of whether employees can be productive from afar; rather, it’s a matter of how businesses can leverage this newfound flexibility. As labor shortages and rising wages make it increasingly difficult to retain talent, companies are looking beyond our borders for cheaper, yet still talented labor.

According to a recent Wall Street Journal article, 7.3% of US senior managers surveyed by the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta said they were moving more jobs abroad as a result of remote work. Nicholas Bloom, an economist at Stanford University, estimates that 10% to 20% of US service support jobs like software developers, HR professionals, and payroll administrators could move overseas in the next decade.

Recommendation from Brandie Laughner, President of VLERA, for Dr. Gleb Tsipursky

“A few weeks ago, we had the pleasure of co-hosting a webinar that was presented by Dr. Gleb. This webinar, using hybrid work to improve retention and productivity while cutting costs, was an excellent experience. He presented his research in a thoughtful and engaging way. He engaged with his attendees. He also gave them the opportunity to ask questions and give feedback at the end of the webinar. As a result, the survey feedback that we received following Dr. Gleb's presentation was resoundingly positive. If you have the opportunity to work with Dr. Gleb, whether as a presenter or consultant in your organization, I highly recommend it.

What's Up With Me

One of the nice things about having a vegetable garden and living in Columbus, Ohio, where global climate change is raising the temperature and delaying the first frost date, is being able to enjoy summer veggies late into the Fall. It’s strange to be harvesting tomatoes, eggplants, peppers, and squash when the trees have lost most of their leaves, but such is our life in the Anthropocene (that’s the term for the current geological age, seen by scientists as the period during which human activity has been the dominant influence on climate and the environment.) While I’m sad about the global impact of climate change, I’m glad I live in Columbus, which gets fewer negative consequences from rising temperature and weather variability than many other parts of the US and the world. That’s one of the reasons I’m glad to live here, and why I planted trees, shrubs, and vines that will take a long time to bear fruit and do best in a climate that's warmer than we have here currently: I anticipate the long-term trends to continue, unfortunately, and want to meet the puck where it’s going, not where it currently is. In the meantime, I’ll enjoy the fruits of my labor later and later into the Fall season.
