What Influences Your Shopping Choices? (Wise Decision Maker Guide 47)

Why do you buy what you buy? Are your purchases for the right reasons? Research shows that people overestimate their logical decision-making when purchasing, and instead make many irrational choices in their shopping. We think we shop based on our self-directed goals. In reality, we are shaped very strongly by our external context: the environment crafted by advertisements and salespeople, as well as website and store layouts.

People overestimate their ability to keep their impulses in check, a tendency that behavioral economists and neuroscientists call restraint bias. It’s a good thing we can use research-based strategies to notice cognitive biases and overcome these mental blindspots.

What's Up With Me

You might have seen that the increasing danger from the highly infectious and deadly Delta variant of COVID has caused the World Health Organization to recommend that fully vaccinated people resume wearing masks and practicing other COVID safety measures. That was scary for me to see, especially in combination with the fact that the US COVID case count has stopped decreasing and has remained stable at a far-from-comfortable rate of over 10K cases per day. So I’ve started taking more precautions, in line with WHO guidance.

It’s unpleasant and uncomfortable, but better safe than sorry, I believe. Even though I’m fulIy vaccinated, I would hate to get the Delta variant and wind up as one of the COVID long haulers. My dad’s COVID illness in March 2020, and his continuing coughing and lung scarring, have made me especially sensitive to this danger.

Recommendations for You

It might be wise for you to start taking more precautions. Consider avoiding spending over 15 minutes in close proximity indoors and unmasked with people whose vaccination status you don’t know. Try to spend more time working from home, and encourage any staff working for you who are unvaccinated to either work from home, or wear masks in the office when they’re using common spaces (and avoid eating with other co-workers indoors). The pandemic is not yet over, however much we may wish it to be, unfortunately. Do what you can to protect yourself and those you care about.
