Greetings Decision maker,
President Trump has embarked on an unprecedented experiment in executive overreach that is destroying the balance of powers and long-standing institutional commitments that have defined American democracy. His second term marks a dramatic departure from established norms, as sweeping policy shifts challenge the very foundations of our political system. Abandoned commitments to federal employees, sudden international withdrawals, and drastic funding freezes all point to a deliberate effort to consolidate power. Such actions are not mere policy adjustments; they constitute a fundamental assault on the constitutional principles that have long guided the nation, while undermining democratic stability and trust in democratic institutions.

When I think about our political system, I approach it from the perspective of my expertise: making good decisions. I know that individual humans are flawed and we regularly fall for cognitive biases. We make mistakes all the time in our thinking, and that's why institutions are so important. They provide the checks and balances, the external perspective, which research on debiasing suggests are so needed to correct for our biases. Yet such institutions only work if politicians across the political spectrum cooperate on supporting these institutions. Institutions benefit everyone, yet individual politicians can get ahead by defecting against them. Such defection, if unpunished, creates a race to the bottom, undermining a common understanding of truth and a shared commitment to civility. My hope is that we can find our way to truth and civility, defend our institutions, and rebuild trust. |
