Disaster Avoidance Experts

Greetings Decision maker,

Republicans in Congress, bolstered by a 41-page report from the House Oversight Committee, have unleashed a wave of criticism against federal telework policies. Their claims, aired at a January 15th congressional hearing titled “The Stay-at-Home Federal Workforce,” portray telework as a costly indulgence that prioritizes the convenience of federal employees over the needs of taxpayers.

While these allegations make for strong political soundbites, they crumble under scrutiny. Contrary to the narrative of waste and dysfunction, telework has been shown to increase productivity, reduce costs, and improve employee satisfaction in both the federal and private sectors. Attempts to dismantle telework ignore the wealth of data proving its value and threaten to disrupt essential government services while imposing significant costs on taxpayers.

What's Up With Me

I was recently talking to the Executive Director of a community foundation about helping the organization figure out their flexible work plans, and she told me they couldn't proceed with the project, because the new administration froze the funding for nonprofits, and the foundation had to dedicate their funding to helping the nonprofits in their community weather the storm. This situation made me think about the second and third-order effects of government actions. The freeze on nonprofit funding to determine whether anything is going to DEI resulted in nonprofits being unable to help veterans, elderly, sick, poor, and others that the government supports through nonprofit funding. That, in turn, led to funders like community foundations tapping their funding devoted to other things, like organizational development, and redirecting it toward emergency support for nonprofits. And that, in turn, led to the impact of the community foundation not pursuing the engagement with me. Did the recent funding freeze have any impact on your organization?
