Wise Decision Maker Guide: Wise Decisions Through Cognitive Science
Greetings Decision maker,

With headlines about spread of the novel coronavirus dominating the news cycle, the past couple of weeks have seen mainstream media put out lots of information for how to plan for the pandemic based on guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). These suggestions have been to prepare for disruptions that might last for a couple of weeks at most resulting from a local outbreak.

However, when we consider the facts about COVID-19, it’s clear that these suggestions would prepare us for a highly optimistic scenario, where we get very lucky. Yet do you want to bet that we’ll get ten heads in a row? Instead, we need to prepare for the realistic pessimistic scenario of years of impact by COVID-19 on your organization and personal life.

Why do we greatly underestimate the impact of major disruptions such as COVID-19 and how can we plan effectively instead?
The answers are in this blog.

What’s Up With Me

Sudden changes in business and travel plans due to COVID-19 have not spared me. Just returned from my multi-destination trip, where one of my events, a keynote at the DC CUPA-HR conference, was cancelled. Glad that the organizers took proactive action to avoid a large gathering and hope to reschedule with them for a future date. Fortunately I was able to adjust my flights and spend the extra day with mom, who celebrated her 70th birthday over the weekend. Now I’m back and getting back to my daily routines here at home in Columbus, OH. Good to be back!

Never Go With Your Gut Book Endorsement
As an organizational designer, I have witnessed senior leaders mess things up by going with their gut – they were actually winging it, but came up with a fancier way to explain their stupidity! Gleb Tsipursky has taken his personal passion and translated it to an engaging book that will help you overcome your cognitive biases. If you are a leader keen to have a larger organizational impact you can’t make a better decision than to read this gem of a book that provides you with a practical framework for making the right and effective decisions.
