Greetings Decision maker,
Picture this: you’re running a marathon, but one of your shoes is suddenly filled with pebbles. Your performance suffers, and your personal best time slips away like sand through your fingers. In the business world, unproductive employees can be the pebbles in your shoe. They may not be immediately noticeable, but the impact on your organization’s performance can be serious: the difference between a mediocre quarter and an outstanding one.
That’s happening to many companies across the board: the United States is currently experiencing an unprecedented occurrence, with five straight quarters of year-on-year drops in productivity. This phenomenon has never been recorded in the available data, which dates back to 1948. The shoes of all companies are filled with pebbles now, but so many companies underestimate their costs.

What’s Up With Me
Writing to you from my travels to Hawaii, where I’m helping Norpac Fisheries Export develop its strategic plan for the next five years. (While most of Norpac's sales are to retailers and restaurants, they also sell fresh and frozen seafood to the public through through their Fresh Seas
website). Before the strategic retreat, I spent a few days exploring the Big Island with my wife and business partner Agnes Vishnevkin. It's a stunning place, and the variety of environments is striking. Driving across the island from the west to the east, we started off from pristine sandy beaches, proceeded through the semi-arid dry side of the island, and then drove across Hawaii's tallest mountain, Mauna Kea - while it was in the 80s on the beach, it was just below freezing at the summit, and around 50 F (10 C) at around 9,200 feet, where we donned some extra layers and took a short hike. Finally, we drove down the mountain through the wetter part of the island, with vegetation growing more lush as we gradually descended toward the coast. It’s hard to imagine another place where you can see this much climatic variation in less than 2 hours!
Speaking of lush vegetation and unique environments, we enjoyed our visit to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Here's a photo of me at a steam vent near the Kilauea volcano.
