Greetings Decision maker
,

While deeply fulfilling, establishing and growing a startup poses serious dangers for your mental health. During the expansion stage, a founder will often face brutally long workweeks, pressure from different sources to manage the startup while raising funding, and the stress of having to make many decisions – all at the same time. It isn’t surprising that many startup founders find themselves developing mental health challenges if they don’t take steps to prevent such problems.

Unfortunately, mental health challenges still face serious stigma in entrepreneurial circles, and thus often are not discussed and addressed. Sometimes, these issues are discussed implicitly under the framework of founder burnout or work-life balance, and you might have heard about it through such framings. Perhaps you know that, for instance, burnout manifests in many ways and a startup founder who is burning out may go through different stages. The key is to identify when you are on the verge of burnout and take steps to address it immediately. Otherwise, the effects can be quite damaging.

What's Up With Me

Do you do a major celebration for your birthday? Once I got into my twenties, I stopped making a big deal about my birthday. I’d just have a quiet celebration with my wife and business partner Agnes Vishnevkin. We established a nice ritual where she would plan activities for my birthday, and I would do the same for hers, but nothing major. A typical example would be doing a painting class and then going out to a nice restaurant. Given my birthday is on February 10 and we don’t live in a warm climate, activities for my birthday are usually indoors

This year going to an indoor restaurant or any other indoor activity was out of the question due to the risk of catching COVID. And given the strain on hospitals, especially with the new strains, we didn’t want to go on any outdoor adventures such as skiing to avoid the risk of injury that might require a hospital visit.

However, given the mental health challenges of the pandemic, it’s more important than ever to take advantage of opportunities for celebrations. As an entrepreneur and as a coach and consultant to other entrepreneurs and startup founders, I especially appreciate the value of mental health for professional and personal success. So for my 40th birthday this year, Agnes planned out a lovely day for us at home, with a number of gifts. In fact, she spent many weeks crafting a very special handmade gift that is literally - not figuratively - the most thoughtful gift I have ever received. I started to explore it on my birthday, but it will take me many days to go through the whole thing, extending the joy to weeks, instead of just the day of my birthday. It’s a real lift to my spirits in this very difficult year.

Recommendations for You

Where can you take advantage of opportunities for joy, cheer, and celebration, for yourself and for others you care about? It might feel uncomfortable to celebrate in the midst of such devastation. Over 480,000 Americans died of COVID, more than in World War II and the Vietnam War combined; around the world over 2 million died.

Yet it’s especially important to do so now, for the sake of your mental health and your ability to succeed in your professional and personal life, as well as for the sake of people in your circle of care. Celebrate big wins and small ones. Feel joy over successfully avoiding disasters. Be especially proud of your accomplishments. Do so much more than you would in a normal year; continue to do so as we exit out of the pandemic over the next couple of years, which will still be a very difficult period in our lives. That’s how you’ll rocket-boost your pandemic and post-pandemic resilience.
