Greetings Decision Maker,

A creative director stares at a blank page at 8:07 a.m., coffee cooling beside a half-finished brief. Ten years ago, that page would have pulled in a crowd: copy, art, strategy, maybe a junior team to feed the room. Today, the room can fit in a laptop, and the first sparks arrive in seconds.

A massive new experiment from the University of Montreal points to a clear turning point: generative AI now beats the average person on certain creativity tests, even with older models such as GPT-4 that are over a year out of date. The implication for creative work is transformative.

Testimonial from REF Group Chair Brian Gladden for Dr Gleb Tsipursky's talk on AI adoption

"We had Gleb talk to our group in Fresno last week, and they thought it was an amazing presentation. Actually, many said it was the best they had seen over the past several years. We are looking to bring Gleb out to do a workshop with multiple companies to help them get comfortable with AI, and then possibly even bring him out to individual companies themselves for a deeper dive. He is very engaging and interactive, and I recommend him for any other peer groups."

What's Up With Me

Whenever I have the sniffles - whether it’s due to cold weather in the winter or allergies in the spring and summer - it’s hard to fall asleep. I can hear myself making whistling sounds when I breathe in and out, and it’s really distracting. My wife and business partner Agnes recommended nose strips that she was using to combat snoring, and they helped somewhat by pulling nostrils open. Unfortunately, the adhesive would not last through the night, resulting in me waking up in the middle of the night and hearing myself making whistling noises, making it hard to fall asleep again. Recently, she recommended something new, a small reusable plastic nasal dilator that holds nostrils open without adhesive and helps me avoid the guilt about the waste created by single-use nose strips.

This whole episode made me think about the little things that make life more comfortable. On the one hand, it seems like caring about sniffles impeding sleep is a first-world problem. On the other hand, it sucks to not get enough sleep. It makes me grateful to inventors in a capitalist marketplace that try to figure out what kind of problems people have who have a bit of extra cash to spend and how to make their lives easier. It also makes me more interested in making donations to people in developing countries who have much bigger problems than I do. For them, nasal dilator would be an unnecessary luxury, given their needs for tin roofs that don’t leak, malaria nets to protect their kids against deadly disease-carrying mosquitoes, and basic cellphones to access the world wide web and be able to earn a better living. They are on the margins of the capitalist marketplace and my donations can make a small difference in pulling them closer to the center.

That’s not to say I feel guilty for spending money on the nasal dilator, as I don’t feel obliged to donate every last penny that I can spare. I can decide how to spend my money, and investing in the well-being of those less fortunate than I am helps me feel good. Still, I think it’s a good thing to use this opportunity of a small luxury that makes my life better both to recognize the wonder of entrepreneurial capitalism and to consider how to help those on its margins.
