Greetings Decision maker,

How do you defeat unconscious bias? First, you need to know what it is.

Unconscious bias (also known as implicit bias) refers to unconscious forms of discrimination and stereotyping based on race, gender, sexuality, ethnicity, ability, age, and so on. It differs from cognitive bias, which is a predictable pattern of mental errors that result in us misperceiving reality and, as a result, deviating away from the most likely way of reaching our goals.

Organizations often bring me in as a speaker on diversity and inclusion to address potential unconscious discriminatory behavior. In this Wise Decision Maker Guide I’ll share how I help them achieve lasting change and shift their internal culture.

Recent Media Appearances

I’ve had a number of recent media appearances about my three recent best-selling
books:

    What’s Up With Me

It’s been good to have a laid-back schedule. I’m getting in a lot more gardening and can finally work on improving our fencing to keep out the pesky deer. Did you know they can jump over 8 feet? I sure didn’t!

On a professional note, I and my co-principal at Disaster Avoidance Experts, Agnes Vishnevkin, have been working on using the “Defend Your Future” process to revise our own internal strategic plan. With the overwhelming amount of work in the Spring responding to media attention and client demand due to COVID-19, we haven’t had a chance to do it earlier, even though I’ve been beating the drum about everyone needing to revise their own strategic plan. Well, now we’re doing ours.

Instead of doing an intense strategic retreat, which we usually did in the past, we’re instead experimenting with taking about one day a week to work only on strategy through the end of the summer. Excited to see the results of this experimental process! I always try out new approaches internally inside the company before offering it to clients as an option, and I hope this approach works out well.

    Help Me Serve Your Needs

What are some case studies of unconscious bias that you observed? Where might unconscious bias be a problem for you? What steps will you take based on reading this article?

Look forward to your feedback! I strive to improve my ability to help you avoid decision disasters and maximize success, so any feedback you can provide on this content - or anything else - will help me serve your needs better.

    Decisively Yours,

    Gleb
