Your Testimonials

You and others who gain value from Disaster Avoidance Experts services and thought leadership occasionally share testimonials about your experience, such as the one below. You can read more testimonials here.

“We were dealing with a serious conflict between two team members about perceptions of broken trust and potential disclosure of confidential information. We turned to Disaster Avoidance
Experts to consult with us on addressing this issue, with the intention of confronting the team members to investigate the disclosure of this information.

Gleb helped make us aware of the underlying emotional drivers of the two team members, particularly feelings of alienation, which would be worsened as a result of a confrontation, and potentially result in a valuable employee leaving. As a result of this consultation, we decided to move forward without a confrontation, instead focusing on addressing the feelings of alienation. We were glad that the employee who we were going to confront took it upon themselves to reach out to the other team member and mend fences, and now they're in a better place with each other.

We are grateful for Gleb's insights into the emotional perspectives of the two team members, which made us better suited to deal with this situation, and retain a valuable employee."

What's Up With Me

It’s been an exciting (and tiring) time for me! On Monday, May 16, I gave the opening keynote for over 1,000 attendees at the Casualty Actuarial Society Spring Meeting in Orlando, Florida, titled “How Insurance Actuaries Can Be the Heroes of the Post-Pandemic Recovery Via Behavioral Science.” That keynote focused on how to adapt to new risks and make the wisest decisions in the future of work, which is difficult due to our mental blindspots called cognitive biases. These cognitive biases prevent us from seeing the differences between the post-pandemic environment and cause us to try to turn back the clock to January 2020. Doing so results in us failing to appreciate how to address new dangerous threats and seize promising opportunities, such as optimizing hybrid work arrangements.

After the keynote in Orlando, I flew to Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, arriving after midnight. The next morning, on Tuesday, May 17, I got up and drove to give a four-hour talk to a group of executives from middle-market companies, and then did the same thing for a different group of executives in the afternoon. And then I had two more days of the same: two four-hour talks per day, one in the morning and one in the afternoon.

It’s a relief that the vaccines are enabling us to have a more normal life and for my work to pick up: I’m passionate about helping people avoid suffering by making the best decisions around the future of work, especially in adapting to hybrid work. Yet that’s a pretty intense schedule! I’m hoping to avoid that pace of work in the future.

What’s your work schedule like right now? How are you doing with your adaptation to work as we’re navigating to the new normal?

Recommendations for You

Here are a few articles that I found valuable and hope you will, too:

  • The Marriage Lesson That I Learned Too Late describes how seemingly small conflicts can ruin a marriage. This article helps provide a different perspective on relationships than the topic of my article in this email - it focuses on how to make relationships last, rather than starting them effectively.
  • The Difference Between Hope and Optimism explores the rarely-discussed difference between the two concepts and describes why hope is better than optimism. It closes with a 3-step guide for increasing hope to improve our lives.
  • Opening up Science—to Skeptics offers an interesting perspective on how to address some of the concerns of science deniers/skeptics by getting them involved in the scientific process.
Help Me Serve Your Needs

Would love to get your feedback! Helping you avoid dangerous threats and missed opportunities is my highest aspiration. Any feedback you can provide on this content - or anything else - will help me provide you with more value for your success.
