Greetings Decision maker,

Have you changed your views about COVID-19 since this pandemic started? Or are you anchoring to the same views you had in March?

For example, many people still believe the false claim spread by many prominent leaders in March that COVID is no worse than the common flu. They protest against public health measures such as wearing masks, despite high-quality peer-reviewed studies showing that masks save lives. They also ignore new developments, such as the requests by governors to stay at home and telecommute to tamp down the explosive third wave of COVID.

With all the information out there regarding this world-disrupting virus, there are plenty of opportunities to add to your knowledge of current events. If we truly relied on the facts, our perspective would be very different from where we started.

Unfortunately, the reality is more complex. We tend to continue treading the same path based on information we initially received regardless of new evidence that our path leads off a cliff. The name cognitive neuroscientists and behavioral economists give to this dangerous judgment error is anchoring.

It’s one of the many cognitive biases that lead us to make poor decisions, regarding the pandemic and other life areas. Recognizing the danger and impact of these cognitive biases helps us make much better decisions to manage risks wisely and survive and thrive in this pandemic.

What’s Up With Me

It’s been a sad week, and not just because of the gloomy weather in my hometown of Columbus, Ohio. Our elderly cat Ophelia has been sick for a long time, but she got a lot sicker two weeks ago. She was really suffering and my wife and business partner Agnes Vishnevkin and I decided it was time to let her go and euthanize her. It was hard to say goodbye to such a sweet cat after more than 16 years together. We really miss her.

Recommendations For You

How well equipped are you to deal with your own sad moments, in personal life or in businesses? From losing a beloved pet or having your house burglarized to failing to close a critically important business deal or being fired from a job, our emotional reactions spring from the same place. Sadness and grief are expressions of our loss of an expected desirable future.

Whether in personal life or in business, it’s important to take the time to process difficult losses. Unfortunately, we are less likely to do so in business than in our personal life. This leaves us vulnerable to stress and poor decisions that stem from unresolved emotions. One book that helped me learn how to process losses in business settings is Daniel Goleman’s Emotional Intelligence, so that’s my recommendation. You can check out my notes on the book here.
