Greetings Decision maker
,

The pandemic has forced organizations to recognize that they need to adapt their work culture to the hybrid and remote future of work. Employees will be spending different amounts of time in the office: some essential employees might be there full-time, others will be there 1-3 days a week, and some will be fully remote. That presents the danger of a sense of resentment building up between “haves” and “have nots” around schedule flexibility. How do you create a work culture that addresses such concerns?

What's Up With Me

SHOCKED is the right description for how I feel about Russia's attack on Ukraine. I usually don't write about politics: I don't like to mix politics with business. But I think all fellow business people can recognize that war is bad for business.

I heard a number of people critical of the negative business impact of sanctions. Sure, it might be painful to experience the impact of sanctions on Russia. However, we need to think about the long-term impact of deterring war. If the pain of sanctions right now can deter other governments from warfare, then sanctions are the right choice.

To be clear, I do not at all support US troops in Ukraine. But I do fully support sanctions on Russia, to deter it and other countries from warfare. Let's hope this is the last war perpetrated by a developed country that we will ever see.

Recommendations for You

My recommendation is to consider how your life might be impacted if developed, modern countries like Russia started attacking other countries around them. The biggest potential threat, of course, is China attacking Taiwan, but who knows what other autocratic modern states might do. After considering this, take steps that would help address this problem, such as by mitigating your exposure to political risks and by supporting penalties against aggressive countries.
