Greetings Decision maker
,

Many employees excel in hybrid or even fully remote work settings, outperforming expectations to deliver outstanding results. Others in the same roles struggle to work effectively outside the office, even if they have the same home office arrangements and are deemed equally talented by their managers.

Having helped 21 organizations figure out successful hybrid work arrangements and written a best-selling book about this topic, I can confidently state that employee personality differences are an important driver of these seemingly random performance differences. My consulting clients found that by matching hybrid work arrangements to the relevant personality traits of their workers, they can optimize employee performance, resulting in a win-win for everyone involved.

What's Up With Me

Hardy kiwis grow on a vine that needs to be pruned aggressively to avoid taking over the garden. Well, I pruned my hardy kiwi several days ago, but then an unexpected frost hit my area, dropping the temperature to 29 Fahrenheit (-2 Celsius). I woke up this morning to see all the work I did undone, with the hardy kiwi stalks completely shriveled. I really wish I hadn't pruned the vine, since it caused the plant to weaken and made it more vulnerable to the cold.

Seeing the damaged vine made me realize that, while I am really focused on applying good decision-making principles to my work activities - both internally and when serving my clients - I’m less diligent about doing so in my personal life. If I had only tried to apply the “5 Questions to Avoid Decision Disasters” technique to my gardening, I’m confident I would have waited for another couple of weeks before trimming the hardy kiwi. So where might you be applying rigorous thinking to one area of your life, but not doing so in other areas that can benefit from more discipline and consideration?
