Greetings Decision maker,

How can you prepare for the possibility of the US Presidential election resulting in a disaster?

That question may sound unreal to you. Yet it doesn’t sound so far-fetched to many political leaders and experts observing the run-up to the election. With many more mail-in ballots, which take much longer to count and are much more vulnerable to legal challenges, the counting might drag on for many weeks. It may well be accompanied by widespread civil disturbances, serious economic turmoil, and potentially a constitutional crisis.

When I asked you and other colleagues about this in a LinkedIn poll, nearly two thirds (65%) said they are concerned that the election vote count might turn into a disaster that substantially disrupts their work. Yet in follow-up interviews, almost no one is taking specific steps to address this possibility for their work and life.

Do you find yourself avoiding taking concrete steps to prepare for the possibility of an election disaster? Perhaps your rational, reasonable brain admits the distinct possibility of an election disaster, your gut simply doesn’t buy it. A voice inside your gut whispers that it never happened before, and so it won’t happen now.

Do you remember hearing that same voice when you were reading articles at the beginning of this year about the possibility of COVID-19 turning into a devastating pandemic and the need to prepare for it?

Our brains have a disastrous tendency to underestimate low-probability and high-impact disruptors, sometimes referred to as “black swans.” This causes us to suffer preventable disasters due to being unprepared.

Recommendations For You

Well, given what I wrote above about the possibility of an election disaster, I’d strongly recommend you prepare for it. Review your emergency preparedness plans for your household and your business continuity plan for your business. Update both by using the Failure-Proofing Technique with a focus on the possible election disaster to maximize your preparedness for this potential catastrophe.
    Recent Public Appearances

You might find of interest a number of recent public appearances about my three recent best-selling books and about the topic of election disaster risk discussed in this email:

    • Interview for an article in USA TODAY, the largest newspaper in the US, on adjusting our expectations about going back to normal amid COVID pandemic
    • Article in the New York Daily News, one of the Top 10 newspapers in the US, on preparing for an election disaster from the perspective of your household

    What’s Up With Me

I’ve been feeling a combination of anxiety, sadness, and dread coming to terms with the significant possibility of an election disaster. While very much hoping for the best, I know that the right approach to serious risks is to “hope for the best, but plan for the worst.” So, that’s what I’ve been doing, together with my wife and business partner Agnes Vishnevkin. The conversations and preparation have been draining and difficult, but I feel optimistic that she and I will be as ready as we can be by the time this situation might occur. I never thought that living in the capital of a swing state - Ohio - and only two miles away from the local county Board of Elections would put me in a risky spot, but such is life. There are many other risks that we’ve been working to address as well. I very much hope our preparations won’t be needed.

    Help Me Serve Your Needs

How might your approach to the pandemic inform how you respond to the possibility of an election disaster? How might cognitive biases impede your ability to acknowledge election disaster risk and prepare for it? Which next steps will you take based on this article/video/podcast?

Look forward to your feedback! I strive to improve my ability to help you avoid decision disasters and maximize success, so any feedback you can provide on this content - or anything else - will help me serve your needs better.

    Decisively Yours,

    Gleb
