Disaster Avoidance Experts

Greetings Decision maker,

The Trump administration has initiated what may become the most devastating dismantling of the federal workforce in modern history, not with mass firings, but with a carefully designed invitation to resign. The recently announced deferred resignation program, introduced via an Office of Personnel Management (OPM) memo, offers federal employees a lucrative off-ramp: full pay and benefits until September 30, 2025, with exemption from in-person work requirements, and many put on administrative leave.

Many will take this offer. Facing mounting uncertainty, a hostile workplace environment, and the erosion of once-ironclad civil service protections, thousands of employees will see this as their best—or perhaps only—chance to leave on their own terms before being pushed out under harsher conditions later. Those most likely to accept the offer? The most experienced, highly skilled federal employees who know their value and have private-sector options. The consequences of this mass departure will not be felt immediately. That’s what makes this such a dangerous, slow-moving disaster.

What's Up With Me

It's been really hard to see the situation with my fatherland of Ukraine. Military assistance cut off, and even intelligence cut off. I'll be traveling to New York later this week to visit my parents for my mom's 75th birthday, and I feel ashamed in front of my dad, who is 84, and was born in Ukraine (my mom was born in Moldova). I anticipate some hard conversations about how he's feeling about the country he immigrated to with my mom and me in 1991, after his homeland was freed from Russian domination. All this time, America served as a bastion of freedom and defense against tyranny, and my dad was proud to live here and taught me to be proud of America. What's happening right now feels like a betrayal, and the long-term consequences will be dire, with our allies around the world no longer being able to count on us and thus failing to support us when we need them. In fact, the only time the NATO alliance's self-defense clause was invoked involved the attack on the US on 9/11, when the US needed help in Afghanistan. What we're seeing is truly a slow-moving train wreck, of promises broken and allies betrayed.
