Greetings Decision maker
,

Bad decisions happen when leaders follow the terrible advice of going with their gut and don’t future-proof their organizations.

Our gut reactions evolved for the ancient savanna environment, when we lived as hunter-gatherers in small tribes of 15-150 people. In the modern world, a major cause of poor decisions is the fight-or-flight response. Critical for our ancestors to survive the life-or-death threats in the savanna, fight-or-flight causes leaders to make quick snap decisions without gathering sufficient data or consulting appropriate stakeholders, often leading to disasters. Bad decisions about people in particular often come from tribalism, our gut reaction’s evolution-based drive to favor people who we perceive to be a part of our tribal in-group, and to discriminate against those from opposing groups.

Learn how to avoid decision disasters and future-proof your leadership in this blog.

“On behalf of the members of the ISACA New York Metropolitan Chapter, I want to thank you for your insightful webinar presentation yesterday. We appreciate the time you took to prepare the two-hour session. Our members found the materials presented to be thought-provoking, engaging, and informative. The topic of the presentation Covid-19 Coronavirus Pandemic Adaptation and Planning via Neuroscience for IT Professionals was in itself timely; it delivered the right message at the right time, when our members are looking for a trusted advisor to provide information that is non-biased and actionable. Your points on normalcy bias, planning fallacy, and hyperbolic discounting really hit home among the attendees. Thank you again for helping to make our educational webinars so rewarding and a most worthwhile experience.

Recent Public Appearances

While I had several recent public appearances, the most meaningful was my recent TV interview and the article based on it about Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. This interview helps clarify how those of us with heritage from that part of the world are being impacted by this conflict. My dad is Ukrainian, and I was born in Moldova to a Moldovan mom. Before my family immigrated to the United States when I was 10, I spent summers in Ukraine and still have extended family in Kyiv. At the same time, I have lots of Russian contacts in the US and talk about their perceptions and reactions. The interview and article also cover risk management and disaster avoidance in the context of this war, and what we can do better going forward.

This interview is one part of my efforts to do what I can to help out the Ukrainian people in this terrible situation, by helping others understand the context better and encourage them to make better decisions going forward. My hope is that my own heritage, combined with my expertise in risk management and disaster avoidance, can make a positive difference. Please share the interview if you think it can help other folks see the situation in a clearer light.

What's Up With Me

The situation in Ukraine is terrible, and I’m desperately hoping for peace. However, the more logical risk management and decision making side of me recognizes that outcome is very unlikely in the near-term future. The only silver lining was the great news that the US government has recently decided to do exactly what I called for in the interview: to admit a substantial number of Ukrainian refugees. That’s a meaningful step that will improve things for Ukrainians. My family was able to settle in the US as refugees when I was 10 (due to the persecution of Jews when Ukraine was still part of the Soviet Union), and I am confident we will see many hardworking and talented Ukrainians coming here in the near future.

Here is a photo of myself as a young child before my family immigrated from what used to be the former Soviet Union, which later broke up into Ukraine, Russia, Moldova, and many other countries. Behind me, left to right, are my older sister, my dad, and my mom.

Recommendations for You

I have a personal stake in the Russia-Ukraine conflict and of course can’t remain fully impartial. So you should not consider me a fully objective source of recommendations of what to decide, think, and feel regarding Russia’s war in Ukraine. I do my best to recognize and admit my own partiality here, as well as to correct for it. So I recommend you consider my words and recommendations with the recognition of my inherent partiality and my efforts to correct for it so that you get an accurate picture of the situation from someone with roots - and still-existing ties - to the region.
